Girls Write the World is a free, girls-only writing and empowerment program for young women in the Mississippi Delta. We are dedicated to providing a safe space for female creativity and serving as an effective platform for fostering self-esteem, developing leadership skills, and building community in Mississippi. Under our model, young women come together to study the work of celebrated poets, develop their own writing, and build critical consciousness around issues of injustice in their community and the larger world. Our feminist, anti-racist programming utilizes writing as a tool to magnify one’s voice and build self-confidence and leadership skills. We empower our participants by providing them with quality sex-ed, college access, healthy relationship coaching, healthy living strategies, anda feminist toolkit, which equips them toactivelyidentify, critique, and fight against racism and sexism.
To date, we have produced two week-long summer programs in June of 2015 and 2016 and hosted one day-long retreat in February 2016. We have served over 40 young women in grades 9–12, created over 100 pieces of original poetry, published 2 camper poetry anthologies, and produced three public showcases. In 2017, Girls Write the World will return to Greenville to produce a second annual Writer’s Retreat in April and a third annual summer camp in June.
