Leflore County School District is one of 3 districts in the state of Mississippi that is under conservatorship (State takeover due to failing test scores). Under conservatorship, our students have been required to take biweekly exams in all of their subjects and spans over a two day period. The scores continue to come back low. The students at Amanda Elzy are brilliant despite these scores. However, students are feeling exhausted and hopeless due to over testing and low graduation rates. These students have dreams and ideas with no means for display. We lack art, music, foreign language, and any other extracurricular programs-they need an outlet.
Our goal, with the help of a group of 8th grade students, is to put on a college and career readiness night where students are able to display their college/career ready talents to a group of representatives from local colleges/universities and institutions around the country. These representatives will evaluate student projects (much like a science fair) and give my students the hope they need to strive towards making a future for themselves. The group of students I am working with are leading the way and are finally excited about displaying their leadership abilities to our campus.
The money I am asking for will aid us in making this night possible. We are hoping to offer light snacks and refreshments to spark parent involvement, and ultimately, we want to provide a monetary award (scholarship) to the top three college/career ready student pitches. Any donations are much appreciated!
