NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) will be leading eight students and two chaperones from Greenwood High School on a 13-day backpacking trip in the Teton Valley July 10-23, 2018. This incredible experience will challenge participants both physically and mentally; students will traverse steep terrain with heavy packs, learn how to navigate their way through backcountry terrain by reading topographic maps, cook meals for the group and set up campsites each night using only backcountry camping equipment, and foster invaluable leadership, team building, and technical wilderness skills along the way. This trip seeks to address the “adventure gap” that exists in today’s outdoor landscape (that people of color and people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds are seriously underrepresented in outdoor education programs and other outdoor leadership experiences) and solidify the message that the outdoors is for EVERYONE. Please consider supporting us so that our students may have the outdoor experience of a lifetime! Thank you!
So how exactly will this $18,000 be spent? Great question! Here is an approximate breakdown of our donation request:
$11,470 – Cost for 8 students to participate in the NOLS trip. This fee includes basic equipment provided by NOLS (like tents), food rations for 13 days, and the leadership of two trained NOLS wilderness instructors. (NOTE: We have received a generous scholarship from NOLS for this trip – a huge thank you to NOLS for your support!!)
$1,530 (~$190 per student) – Camping clothes for 8 students
$5,000 (~$600 per student) – Cost of flights from Memphis, TN -> Jackson Hole, WY for 8 students
