- Program Description
For the past five years the Roma History Club has made the journey to Washington, D.C. to learn about our nation's capital. Organized this year by Emily Franco and Lenora Vlasic, this 5 day trip has become an important tradition for Roma 8th graders.
Students become motivated to maintain their grades, work hard to raise money, and finally have the experience of a lifetime in the capital. The 85 students who will take this trip hope to visit the White House, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and hear from powerful figures in their government including Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
Unfortunately, the trip costs over $1,500 per student, and money is tight here in Starr County, which was ranked the least affluent county in the nation in 2004. Students raise money locally, but most of our funds come from generous donations from outside of the state. Last year good neighbors, family members, old friends, college professors, and even complete strangers contributed over $10,000 to the trip.
We want all students, regardless of their personal financial situation, to be able to visit Washington DC.
