Program Name
7th & 8th Grade Trip to Washington D.C.

Marisa Simon

Program Description

In 2012, after watching my students' strong response to Elie Wiesel's memoir, Night, I knew they needed an opportunity to learn more, so we planned a class trip to Washington D.C. to tour the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.  My students partnered with teachers, community members and outside donors like you to successfully raise the funds to make the trip from Clarendon, Arkansas to Washington D.C. The trip offered students a chance to approach learning in a way many of them had never experienced before.

While there is a strict behavior requirement to participate in the trip, finances will not hold any students back--either we all go or we all stay home.  The all-inclusive cost to travel to D.C. by bus is $600.00 per student. Our students and their families are dedicated to raising as much of the trip fee as possible.  Half of the total cost of the trip has already been raised locally! Students are currently working toward raising the rest of the money, but additional financial help is greatly needed and deeply appreciated.  We're already halfway there!  You can help us reach our goal!

While students benefit greatly from our classroom readings, activities, and discussions, I have seen first hand how a trip to our nation’s capital can ignite an even deeper love of learning. The 2012 trip was an incredible learning experience for all of us—teachers and students alike.  In the coming years, we are hoping to make the trip a tradition that infuses more meaningful learning opportunities before, during, and after the students’ travel experience.  In order to do this, a small group of dedicated teachers have decided to take 7th and 8th grade students every other year, allowing more time to both cover the relevant material in class and raise the funds to use a reputable educational tour guide company.
