Krispy Kreme
I heard, by word of mouth of course that Mississippi won the title for highest obesity in the nation, and within that, most of that coming from the Delta. Now, I haven't looked at anything scientific to confirm that but I felt a great deal of, well, guilt. Now I know that if in fact that title is rightly ours, it was probably in the making a long time a ago, however, I don't believe our sales of Krispy Kremes is helping much.
We've been selling Krispy Kremes like fiends for a few months now. And I am frankly sick of donuts. However, Mississippi doesn't seem to be. Last week we ordered 300 doz to sell in front of Walmart. (Yes that is 3600 donuts.) Well, I drive to Memphis every weekend to pick up our orders because that is our closest Krispy Kreme. This time, being our largest order, I didn't think about whether or not they would fit in my car. Also this was the first time I had brought a passenger on the drive. Miracle number one, they all fit in my tiny Daewoo thanks to a tenacious man named Charlie with four gold teeth, who kept assuring me that "God didn't bring you all that way to leave empty-handed" and "God wants these kids to go so these donuts will fit!" Which they did. I took his picture.
Miracle number two, we sold them all. Yay. We were really excited. The next weekend we were all set up to sell in Memphis, until it occurred to the stores that we were not from Memphis and suddenly we had no where to go and 300 boxes to get rid of. I called EVERYONE. If my name was on your caller id this week that's why. Finally a small grocery store and a gas station agreed to let us come. Unfortunately, the day of about 6 of the 9 students who were supposed to come came down with the flu. And so there were two students and one parent at the supermarket, and myself and one girl at the gas station.
At about 1 the grocery store group knew they were beat and brought us their money. We didn't know when to quit and so when we realized no one could see us where we were we stood by the road and hollered at people. We lowered the price to just over cost, to try to move donuts, but at the end of the day we learned a valuable lesson. Venue is everything. So I have 100 boxes still in my trunk. We've been selling them to students at school everyday. Tomorrow we lower the price, we will probably be giving them away by Friday. At least we broke even.
